Early childhood development is critical and influences the whole future of a child as it is the foundation of future learning and development. Poor stimulation as a child in some or all areas of their development can result in poor eye-hand coordination or visual perception. This can result in a barrier to reading or an inability to cope with maths. Many school learner barriers can be avoided with the early identification of a barrier and taking the required action to remedy the concern. Attention is given to the social and emotional development as well as school readiness skills. In the weekly session each learner participates in small groups or 4 to 5 learners. In these small groups the therapist can see and evaluate each learner’s development. For this age group, Occupation Therapy uses play as a remediation tool. through fun activities the children are relaxed and don’t feel threatened by new activities and respond enthusiastically. At The Yard Preparatory Academy there is a caring and nurturing interaction between educators and learners. The learners are taught and stimulated in a disciplined environment. This leads to balanced and well behaved children who are a pleasure to work with.
